Boardwell and Thompson draws its elements from hollywood and continuity and talks about four different elements of editing
Rhythmic
This refers to the timing of the video. The video is treated like a piece of music in the way editing is done so it cuts on the beat off the beat while accenting and not accenting certain parts of the video or film. The shots and the timing between them is a crucial element that helps to dictate the rhythm of the video.
With long drawn out shots this often is used when showing something emotional and in depth where the audience needs to absorb some form of important visual or auditory stimulus however short very snappy shot dictate a piece filled with speed and tension and often composes of several hundred short clips of something very exciting to pick audience adrenaline levels up but keep them guessing as to what the clip is really about.
Temporal
this part of the thoery focuses on the timing elemants of films and how they can be manipulated in order to give a dramatic twist or some form of a variation on the current plot line. for example when you fastforward to another point in the plot you create a sense of mystery but when you flashback you can give viewers a greater scope of the storyline for example in the film momento the storyline is constantly being thrown back and forward to create both enicmatic and mysterious vibes in the story.
it also focueses on the point of shots that are not relevant for example obvious things such as eating and drinking as they bear no relevance to the dramtics oo the storyline.
Rythmic
rythmic discuesses the lengths and the paces of your shots like in a piece of music each shot has its own varying level of tempo and rhythmic pace.
the best example of this is in cinemas when you see movie adverts. these short sequence of clips is carefulyl edited useing this theory depending on what the filmakers are trying to achieve. the movie might be a romcom so would have long slow shots to capture viewers intrest whereas action would be short sharp and direct so they excite the viwers which makes them want to go and see the movie more.
Spatial
spatial discuses wear the film was shot and refers to the simalrity between shots thereafter. master shots illustrate the spatial element with a master shot depicting the location of the film and then subsequents that follow to give the viewer bits and pieces of a storyline. master shots help the viewer to create there own impression of the space they are looking at. EG like in mission impossible when you see tall buildings fast cars and guns you develop the sterotypical impression of a spy however someone else may assume that it is a movie involving rich war-ing gangsters.
