boardwell and thompson

Boardwell and Thompson draws its elements from hollywood and continuity and talks about four different elements of editing

Rhythmic

This refers to the timing of the video. The video is treated like a piece of music in the way editing is done so it cuts on the beat off the beat while accenting and not accenting certain parts of the video or film. The shots and the timing between them is a crucial element that helps to dictate the rhythm of the video.
With long drawn out shots this often is used when showing something emotional and in depth where the audience needs to absorb some form of important visual or auditory stimulus however short very snappy shot dictate a piece filled with speed and tension and often composes of several hundred short clips of something very exciting to pick audience adrenaline levels up but keep them guessing as to what the clip is really about.

Temporal

this part of the thoery focuses on the timing elemants of films and how they can be manipulated in order to give a dramatic twist or some form of a variation on  the current plot line. for example when you fastforward to another point in the plot you create a sense of mystery but when you flashback you can give viewers a greater scope of the storyline for example in the film momento the storyline is constantly being thrown back and forward to create both enicmatic and mysterious vibes in the story.
it also focueses on the point of shots that are not relevant for example obvious things such as eating and drinking as they bear no relevance to the dramtics oo the storyline.

Rythmic

rythmic discuesses the lengths and the paces of your shots like in a piece of music each shot has its own varying level of tempo and rhythmic pace.
the best example of this is in cinemas when you see movie adverts. these short sequence of clips is carefulyl edited useing this theory depending on what the filmakers are trying to achieve. the movie might be a romcom so would have long slow shots to capture viewers intrest whereas action would be short sharp and direct so they excite the viwers which makes them want to go and see the movie more.

Spatial

spatial discuses wear the film was shot and refers to the simalrity between shots thereafter. master shots illustrate the spatial element with a master shot depicting the location of the film and then subsequents that follow to give the viewer bits and pieces of a storyline. master shots help the viewer to create there own impression of the space they are looking at. EG like in mission impossible when you see tall buildings fast cars and guns you develop the sterotypical impression of a spy however someone else may assume that it is a movie involving rich war-ing gangsters.

goodwins theorie has three separate elemeants to it:

  1. illistration

CD album design

This is our draft design for our CD cover design. We thought hard and very carefully into what direction we went in in regards to our design. Keeping in mind the universal style of hip-hop in that its very focused on key themes such as fame, fortune, glitz and glamour we chose a very symbolic choice of scenery by shooting in a tunnel to represent the artists drive and commitment to making money and succeeding. The fingers on the front cover that make the frame shape help in both showing the artists name (which is frame) and making him the most important feature  in the shot. The back is going to  be the artist making the frame shape with his fingers and the track titles in the back ground.

album advert

This is the advert for our artist that was created. The advert rather than using an image of the album itself has instead used the artist to promote himself as an image rather than let the album promote his image. The album has instead been placed down in the bottom corner so the audience still know that its an album being promoted but its consider less important compared to frame the artist. The advert follows an approach commonly seen in hip-hop where artists often value and place more importance on there image than the image of there material.

location shots

i've taken 6 photos of potential locations that we can use for our shoot

this shot I chose because it had the bridge behind it that has a nice amount of shadow under it which lends to the non-chintzy style of british hip-hop culture.

I liked this location and I think we would be most likely to use it as it gives the very british feel. we could also use it because of the surroundings like the stairs where we could film some interesting shots

we could use this location and the location below to film some of the jogging scenes in our film.

this picture I liked because it was dark and gloomy. being a tunnel i thought it would help compliment the subconscious message of being                                    driven and committed. we could perhaps use this scene slightly later in the video I also liked the compliments between the lighting the small lights gives it a very urban british feel but natural lighting at the end of the tunnel perhaps signifies the artists goal is at the end and he's nearly going to get,

this location we could be very likely to use as the setting works well and would be good for doing some tracking shots or using some multiple shots of this scenery to break up our film and help prevent viewer
fatigue.

this location where definitely going to use for our park bench scene and possibly our jogging scene as-well. the darkness will help add some variation in our film.

where also going to use this location so we can shoot stock footage
of the sunrise that happens over london bridge.

this location we are going to use to capture the footage of a sunrise as we feel it would be a great introduction to our film because the song is       called good morning. this choice of location is good in ghilighting the british hip-hop style of our video, a strong visual element will blend nicely with the time-lapsed sun rise footage where going to use as a literal message for "good morning".

location permission

I have got in contact with the film permission department and they have stated that permission needs to be given but we would be given a half hours filming time free of charge.

this is the props, costume and makeup that we will need in order to shoot
a successful music video. the video is going to be stripped down british
hip-hop so we wont need as many props compared to the very glamourous look
of american hip-hop that has been popularised by the likes of 50 cent and p diddy

Advertisement research

When looking at these three adverts that have been made for the
hip-hop genre we notice common convention appearing.

EX 1 Is the type of advert that is promoting its own
big name product but also allowing the artists to
promote themselves off the back off it. The drink itself
is most likely lending itself to the artist because this is
the type of product that wants to be seen in modern day
clubs
EX 2 This advert dose not share the advirtisement space with another product sugeesting that these artists are big enough in the hip-hop world to promote themselves after looking at the advert before we can see that the type of clothing and the surrondings associated with it are very similar. The clothes often seen in these adverts are large plain white t-shirts big chains, caps and hoodys that are often tied in with the typical british club dance culture.
EX 3 This advert is slightly diffrent from the previous three. It draws upon the slightly more glamourous american hip-hop surroundings. This artists wears more glamourous clothign suggesting that he is more famous in the hip-hop world. He is also promoting an alcoholic drink that matches his expensive clothing further contibuting to his fame.

technical tutorials

I have learnt alot from the technical tutorials. I learnt most from the creative blogging video and will use many of the techniques in there to make my blog posts more visually creative rather than just use the common methods of having pictures on there.

track permission email

this is the email to scorcher the artist who's song we are covering in order to ask permission
to use his track. this is an important step to take from a legal point of view as he could sue for compensation for alleged copyright infringement.
